17 Terrific Business Lessons From Kung Fu Panda

Do you have a favourite movie?  One that just makes you laugh out loud whenever you watch it?

Well Kung Fu Panda rocks it for me…in fact, my family have more fun watching me laughing at the movie than they do watching the movie itself.

The reason I love this movie so much is that there are some UNIVERSAL TRUTHS throughout the storyline…plus I’m a sucker for slapstick and great comedic writing.

When I last watched Kung Fu Panda I hit the record button and watch it later without putting the family through it one more time.

Five minutes in, I had to stop and grab my notepad and pen because I was struck with how many great business lessons are contained within this movie…I promise after reading this you’ll look at this movie again in a different light.

So here are 15 terrific business lessons gleaned from Kung Fu Panda - I encourage you to watch the snippets provided:

  1. When you follow your PASSION, you will find your PURPOSE
  2. Be PUNCTUAL – opportunities could be lost because of tardiness
  3. Where there’s a will there’s a way – can’t get through the door, try pole-vaulting a wall instead…if you really want something, you WILL find a way

How can I stay calm in difficult situations?

  1. Don't talk to many people about your problems. Many of them are not interested, and they do not have a solution. Telling many people about your difficult situation might erode your confidence and mental well being in the sense that they might start mocking you with your difficult situation.
  2. Accept that your actions are the only thing that can be controlled and with your actions, you will surely fine a way to get out of the difficult situation.
  3. Be aware that being in a difficult situation is part of life and part of self development. See the difficult situation as an opportunity to grow and learn.
  4. Wake up everyday appreciating the gift of life and read something positive. It could be a Bible or some of those spiritual books.
  5. Go solo, meditate a lot and journal, isolate yourself from the crowd and once again, share your problem only with trusted people that might lift you up again.

When things get tough, you have to get tougher and remaining calm is one of underrated traits.life itself is not meant to be easy, but you can make life easier by conquering your fears. Be strong.

Tamil Nadu Man Makes Patented Technology To Convert Banana Waste Into Ropes

TN School Dropout Developed A Machine To Convert Banana Waste Into Ropes For Bags And Baskets!

PM Murugesan, an inhabitant of Melakkal town in Madurai area, almost twenty years prior, figured out how to utilize the residual banana fibre to mesh them into ropes. These could then be utilized to make different items like mats, sacks, and so on.
The Beginnings

Due to his family’s poor conditions, Murugesan could not finish his education post class 8. He was forced to help his father in the fields as his family did not see much use in his education. He grew up seeing a lot of banana waste being generated around him, which got him thinking about ways to utilise them.

PM Murugesan with his processed banana fibre

It was 2008 when Murugesan, his wife, Malarkodi, and the other family elders started discussing utilising the banana plant waste. The idea struck him on seeing a banana thread being used to thread flowers to create garlands. The sheer difficulty in keeping the rope from breaking apart was a challenge to him. He used a machine that converted coconut husk into ropes for bananas, but it failed.

Using the failure as a crutch, he took that machine and modified it to work for bananas. Upon its success, he added a motor to make it work faster. Working it up further, he used bicycle wheel rims and pulleys to build a spinning machine. He ended up investing INR 1.5 Lakhs and built and patented this machine. He then went to the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) with his invention and they liked his machine and recommended other farmers in the area to use it.

Evolution Of Business

In 2017, Murugesan built up a mechanized rope making machine, in which dual functions could be performed of making the rope and interlacing/twining it together. Murugesan said that he was utilizing a hand-wheel component to make rope from the banana sheath, and that took five individuals for every wheel for the cycle, and each wheel yielded distinctly around 2,500 metres of rope. With the new machine, they produced on normal 15,000 metres utilizing one machine and with only four individuals in all.

Employees at work

They started with five people, which increased to ten, very quickly to twenty, and as of today, they employ over 350 people, with a majority of women in their ranks. Taking the decentralization aspect of a job into account, the work routine is very flexible as the women work from home, weaving new things that can also be coupled as gifts for their children while earning them a decent income. The company currently earns an annual turnover of INR 1.5 crores.
Accolades

He has won seven National Awards and several State Awards, which include the PMEGP (Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme) Award from Khadi and Village Industries Commission under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, National Farmer Scientist Award from Union Ministry for Agriculture and Best Entrepreneur Award from Krishi Vigyan Kendra at Jabalpur.

Despite these accolades, Murugesan feels the most satisfied knowing that he brought about an upheaval of his village and bringing them employability simultaneously.

Can you tell me something inspiring?

In the 1940s, there was a man who, at the age of 65, was living off of $99 social security checks in a small house, driving a beat-up car.

He decided it was time to make a change, so he thought about what he had to offer that other people may benefit from. His mind went to his fried chicken recipe, which his friends and family loved.

He left his home state of Kentucky and traveled throughout the country, trying to sell his recipe to restaurants. He even offered the recipe for free, asking for only a small chunk of the money that was earned.

However, most of the restaurants declined his offer. In fact, 1,009 restaurants said no.

But even after all of the rejections, he persisted. He believed in himself and his chicken recipe.

When he visited restaurant #1,010, he got a YES.

His name? Colonel Hartland Sanders!

There are a few lessons that you can take away from this story. First, it’s never too late in life to find success. In a society that often celebrates young, successful people, it’s easy to start to think you’re never going to be successful after a certain age. However, Colonel Sanders is an example that proves that argument wrong.

This story also demonstrates the power of persistence. You have to have confidence in yourself and believe in your work for other people to believe it too. Disregard anyone who tells you “no” and simply move on.

What is the biggest surprise about getting rich?

Earlier this week, Sylvester Stallone listed one of his houses on the market for $130,000,000.00. That’s not surprising. When you mostly write, direct, produce and star in seven sequels to one of the most popular movies in history, money comes with the territory. Lots of it.

At the age of thirty, Stallone was an unemployed actor. No one was interested in hiring him. An accident at birth cut a facial nerve, leaving one side of his face droopy. It also affected his speech, making him look and sound like Fred Flintstone, minus a few dozen IQ points. He sold his wife’s jewelry without her consent. Still broke, he sold his purebred Mastiff for $50 to buy some food. Sylvester Stallone, the man with no education, no prospects, and no dog hated his life. He thought about the thirteen schools that expelled him for behavior problems, shooting arrows out of classroom windows, hacking the Santa display to pieces with a pipe, painting the neighbor’s house black… He relived the shame when, at the age of 15, he was informed by the school administration that his brain was “dormant”. All his life he had been bullied.

Just one opportunity; that’s all he wanted. To prove to himself and the world that he wasn’t “just another bum from the neighborhood”.

Several days passed. As he wallowed in his misery, sulking and feeling sorry for himself, Stallone heard about Chuck “The Bayonne Bleeder” Wepner, going fifteen rounds with the heavyweight champion, Muhammad Ali. He later watched the fight on ABC’s Wide World of Sports.

This was not possible. Wepner, a mediocre fighter, known for his blood splattering in the faces of people seated in the first three rows rather than his boxing skills, was supposed to lose..badly. Instead, he almost beat the man often considered the greatest boxer of all time.

Stallone was inspired. Although, not a writer, he drafted a script based on a fighter, who against all odds fights the champ. It took him less than a day. Tweaking it took another three or four days.

He gave it to his agent who passed it around. It was great; everybody agreed. A hundred-thousand dollars was offered. James Caan, who had recently played Sonny in The Godfather, would play the lead.

Dead broke, Stallone turned it down.

Three-hundred thousand dollars was offered.

Again, Stallone turned it down. He knew that this was his opportunity. He just wanted to play the part of Rocky. That’s all. Everything else was secondary.

Finally, MGM accepted the offer, giving the unknown Stallone $35,000.00 for the script and the lead. Bets were off. It was doomed for failure, but the risks were insignificant. The entire cost for the making of Rocky came out to less than one-million dollars.

Stallone took the money and bought back his dog, Butkus, to “co-star” with him in the movie.

Rocky ended up grossing over $220,000,000.00. It would turn into a money-making franchise - seven sequels, written, directed and starring Sylvester Stallone. A string of blockbusters, including Rambo, would make Stallone the highest-paid actor in Hollywood.

The biggest surprise about getting rich? Opportunity is everywhere. Believe in yourself. Believe in your dreams. Get off your butt, and achieve your greatness. It’s there for the taking. Just ask Sylvester Stallone, the real-life Rocky.

What exactly differentiates between a start-up CEO and an entrepreneur?

Google’s CEO, Larry Page got the initial idea of an algorithm to collect data from the world wide web. He used his technical skills to collect data, but there was no business model behind the ‘invention’ yet.

This was the innovation.

The entrepreneurial idea happened when Larry Page noticed that the entire Web was connected by links and envisioned that each of these links could be considered as a “referral.” Web pages with more referrals are more valuable for users than others.[1]

Sergey Brin soon joined Larry Page on the quest to create an algorithm that would identify each webpage and give it a ‘value’ based on these backlinks.

Brin and Page, together, developed the PageRank algorithm. They envisioned that their algorithm could be used to build a far superior search engine compared to the existing ones.

That was the business idea.

They started working using Stanford University’s infrastructure from their dorm-rooms. Eventually, the growth of the project caused Stanford's computer networks to experience problems.

Now, to answer your question, what exactly differentiates a start-up CEO from an entrepreneur?

Larry Page was the founding CEO of Google from September 1998 to August 2001 when he stepped down in favor of Eric Schmidt.

Larry acted as founder and entrepreneur for those three years.

Larry and Sergey owned the vision to use their innovation to solve a big problem in the world. Identifying and PROVING their business idea was Larry’s main responsibility as founding CEO of Google.

As the business grew exponentially, so did their need of cash. When they accepted about $50 million in investment from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Sequoia Capital, Larry agreed to step down in order to bring on an experienced leader who could build a "world-class management team."

This is when Eric Schmidt took over Google as Startup CEO.

His role was to manage the growth and build a strong team to execute the vision. Larry later called this ‘parental supervision’ in an interview back in 2001.[2]

The entrepreneur is the individual who has the vision and sees an opportunity in the marketplace. The Startup CEO’s main function is to execute and scale such vision.

What are some mind-blowing facts about social psychology?

[1] Clock the mirroring.

The next time you’re in a conversation with someone, casually cross arms— if they cross their arms too it means that they are interested in the conversation too.

[2] Clock the fidgeting.

Usually when someone is uncomfortable they start fidgeting around. For men— they start touch their face. For girls— they usually start adjusting their clothes, jewellery and start touching their necks.

[3] Clock the exaggerated nodding.

Have you ever been talking to someone and they just keep nodding and nodding every single syllable you’re saying and you know that they can’t possibly be agreeing with every syllable you’re saying?

That’s a sign that they’re having anxiety about what you think about them. They think you’re either judging them in some way or they think you’re doubting their ability to follow instructions.
